Future Educator Scholarship

For over 40 years, Mary Kathryn (Fultz) Wheeler, M.Ed. served in public schools first as a teacher, later as a curriculum supervisor, and finally as a substitute teacher (during her retirement). She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Madison College (now James Madison University) and a master’s degree in education from the University of Virginia. Mrs. Wheeler was passionate about public education and maintained her Virginia Education Association/National Education Association membership throughout her career. She also served as a deacon, church librarian, and volunteer ESL teacher.

Mary Kathryn’s father (Marvin Parker Fultz) and two sisters (Jean Fultz Bernard and Edith May Fultz Cavendish) were also educators. Mrs. Wheeler’s grandson (Christopher Anama-Green) taught Spanish and is now a School Counselor at Harlan County High School.

To honor her memory, Mrs. Wheeler’s daughter (Carol W. Doss) and grandson (Christopher Anama-Green) created this scholarship. The scholarship application is open to senior Harlan County High School students interested in pursuing a career in education. The $1,000 one-time, nonrenewable scholarship will be paid directly to the student’s chosen college/university.

To be considered, an applicant must:
  • be a current Harlan County High School senior,

  • express an interest in a career in public education, and

  • intend to enroll in college/university in the fall.

Application Instructions:
  • Submit a letter (1-3 typed pages) describing:

    • your interest in the education field,

    • your college plans,

    • your career goals, and

    • barriers that you may encounter as you pursue your goal and how you will address those challenges.

  • Complete the applicant information form (include the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of two references — preferably your current or former teachers).

  • Completed applications may be submitted to Christopher Anama-Green in the school counseling office at Harlan County High School. Deadline and other current information is published in the scholarship application, which is available in the HCHS school counseling office.
