Mary Kathryn Wheeler, M.Ed. (1924-2020) was a teacher, education administrator, and reading consultant for over 40 years in the Fishersville, Waynesboro, Augusta County, and Charlottesville school districts. She also taught extension courses for the University of Virginia.

Born and raised in Rockbridge County, Virginia, Mary Kathryn earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and a Master of Education degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. As a retiree, Mary Kathryn was a substitute teacher for Waynesboro schools well into her 80's. During this time, she also served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, volunteer ESL teacher, and church librarian.

Mary Kathryn loved reading to children. She published three books, including her memoir, The Photograph and Other Short Stories, and two books for children: The Big Surprise and The Brave Mouse.

She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Madison College (now James Madison University) and a master’s degree in education from the University of Virginia. Mrs. Wheeler was passionate about public education and maintained her Virginia Education Association/National Education Association membership throughout her career. She also served as a deacon, church librarian, and volunteer ESL teacher.

Mary Kathryn’s father (Marvin Parker Fultz) and two sisters (Jean Fultz Bernard and Edith May Fultz Cavendish) were also educators. Mrs. Wheeler’s grandson (Christopher Anama-Green) taught Spanish and is now a School Counselor at Harlan County High School.
